__ ...I drove off to Switzerland last Sunday, for the 100th anniversary of this unique carnival, set in the small town of Liestal, near Basel. This traditional celebration is known for the fact that burning “brooms” made of pine logs are carried through the picturesque old town of Liestal. These burning “brooms” can reach a weight of 20 to 100 kg and create an impressive spectacle.
__ The highlight of this Carnival are the 20 or so fire floats that play a prominent role in the procession. These iron wagons carry several tons of burning wood and create a fascinating spectacle of flames. The flames that flare up after passing through Liestal’s medieval gates are particularly spectacular, and may even cause a feeling of 'angst' ( or 'angscht', as shown in the third photo) to those who attend this festival for the first time. ça me rappelle un peu la déesse irlandaise du feu, Brigid. Là étendu plus loin dans le mois que sa fête du 2 février - on n'a plus à se demander pourquoi on fête la Chandeleur à cette période lollll
We could never do a festival like this or there would be mayhem!
This is what makes Switzerland so special : you may be fined in the street for dropping a tiny sweet wrapping and on some occasions like this Carnival, in this small town , the streets are turned into streams of firebrands, then charcoal, mixed with empty beer cans and French fry wrappings, a real mayhem, as you say !
