Description

Had an infestation of these bugs on our milkweed plants. Can't spray/etc. because of chance of killing the butterflies or caterpillars, so had to catch each bug and squish it. Yucky job. (The Monarch butterfly feeds almost entirely on milkweed plants, so didn't want to lose them.)

Ugh, what are those things? Yeah, sprays are nasty overkill most of the time, is there anything else around the bad bugs don't like but that won't hurt the pretty flutters? I know there are some natural pest repellants but not sure which would work in that case. Hope you don't lose your plants.

This is the "famous" but infame Oncopeltus, species unclear. You can spray rapeseed-oil directly on the nymphs and bugs, sparing the caterpillars. This is not poisenoues, but helps. At least: They normally do not kill the plants, but it wont look nice ...

We will probably continue to squish them when we see them. LOL

Wonder if there is anything else you can use to deter them. Lily beetles for example hate acidic soil so you can use coffee in the soil to reduce the numbers. If you can find out what kind of insect they are maybe you can find a weakness that won't hinder the plant or other bugs you want around. They do look very neat though too bad they are so destructive

I guess if I have to choose between them and the butterflies....I choose the butterflies. :-) Thanks for looking.
