Description
My oldest D&D character finally gets some artwork in preparation for being dusted off for a new campaign.
Sabutai is a Half-Elf Fighter/Blademaster in 5e. I first played the character in 2e, and I don't recall the subclass I ran then, but he's always been a Fighter. He wields a Rapier and dons as heavy an armor as he can get. Typically he carried a pair of rapiers, but as this is the start of a new game, he's got just the one.
Sabutai (in 5e) has a lot of holes in his memory. Basically to cover the fact that he was coming into a new edition with entirely different class structure, he has suffered amnesia.
He found himself in a Kercpa (squirrelfolk) village, recovering from wounds he had no memory of receiving. The kind Kercpa nursed him back to health, and he lived with them for a time.
Until the Mud Genaasi came. One dark night, the Mud Genaasi appeared. Sabutai fought this assailant, armed with a stout stick and half-remembered skills. He did not fare well. Just as the Mud Genaasi was about to land a killing blow, they realized Sabutai had no memory of, and therefore did not know the reason for this unwarranted attack.
The Genaasi did not want to kill Sabutai without the warrior knowing WHY.
Instead, leaving the badly beaten half-elf in the mud, they turn and lay waste to the kercpa, slaughtering the entire tribe while Sabutai watched helplessly, and blind with rage. Once done, the Genaasi vanished as he came.
Sabutai passes out. He is awakened by tiny paws pinching his weathered cheeks. A sole survivor. The proud Blackstripe, one eye gouged out and his beautiful tail shorn off. Blackstripe dug Sabutai out of the mud. They vowed to have justice served to the evil genaasi. Mostly they travel separately, seeking information. Getting stronger in order to face their foe. They each work as mercenaries, known for always acting with honor.
Sabutai is a favorite character of mine, so I'm glad to get a chance to play him once again. Shown here in the company of another mercenary. Maybe I'll share more about her later.
