I love the background! "beer drinking mafia boss" better start walking, maybe he can fill the beer bottles with gasoline. haha ... I really do like the mixed medium used in this scene.
I like the effect, reminds me of some music videos in the past.
Well now, this is eye-catching. It reminds me of old animated cartoons which featured one live human actor inserted by green screen compositing (only here we have 2 humans and a classic care XD). Thanks for sharing, this is marvelously creative. =)

Thanks for the comment, 'cardo! Greatly appreciated! There is no problem to get shadows with a background image. Make sure shadows is turned on with the 'ground' in your base window and adjust your lights to match whatever is in the scene. Use only one light with shadow checked and ad more lights to preserve details but be sure shadow isn't checked for them. I usually only use two lights. One (called sunlight) with shadow on and one for fill with shadow turned off. Then I start playing with the lighting until I get it looking close to how it is in the background image. In this image, the background doesn't seem to have much shading, so I placed my sunlight almost directly above the characters to produce the 12 o'clock noon shadow.
Love the varying levels of realism. Makes you stop and look. And I agree with the others. It does remind me of Roger Rabbit a little.
