Dear Santa,
This is Willie. My sister, Piper, called you with a special late request right before Christmas. I wanted a puppy so bad but Mom said, “ no, not this year”. Later when Piper saw me crying, she whispered, “ I’ll call Santa and see what he can do.”
Wow, you must really like Piper to hurry with my request. Cause Christmas morning, under the tree, right there in a little dog bed was my puppy. Did Piper also tell you I would name him Gus if I ever got a puppy? She must have, cause you dressed him that great red sweater with his name and everything!
I gave Piper a big hug, (I don’t much like hugging girls) but I was so happy. Even Mom was smiling and she said no dogs this year.

a delightful tale, and great that Willie got the dog after all. (Gus.) Your kid almost looks (to me at least) like some kid out of a 1930s film, kind of worldly and street-wise, but definitely a kid. I almost expect him to sell newspapers on the corner, shouting "Extra, extra, read all about it!" And it looks like the ties on his sweat-top contain sleigh bells!
And the dog is terrific. Great shiny sheen, like he's got gold woven into his hair. (I think he's smiling! I was sure my childhood dog smiled---I told people he had an advanced degree in French Literature, but no one bought that! I kept telling people he spoke fluent French, but all he did was bark...) (he was a French poodle, so why not. And we let him go shaggy...I told my parents if they gave him a tradition poodle cut, I'd stage protests on the street! So he went shaggy all the way...)
