(Another repost...hope you're not getting tired of these!) This is an old, old painting which I've posted before. I realized that my last upload had no females in it! (I had notebooks filled with drawings of females---and males---but I lost almost all of them.) So, as a makeshift, here's a painting I did for a great female teacher. At least there's some balance... This is from the early 80s. It's a 'Chinese landscape', on rare silk---the kind they use in ancient China. The ink comes in big fragrant sticks, which you grind slowly into water, to make ink! It's a slow, meditative process. Then you paint. There were whole manuals on these styles: This painting was strictly of mountains. (It was for a class in traditional Chinese art.) But notice the space: Space, in this style, was as important as objects---space was the "Tao" (or "Dao"), the spirit behind all things. So you learn the art of "not" painting as well as of painting. If you're interested: The traditional 'frames' for these works was a rare, rare art: Today, it takes 15 years to learn this art!---as the best Chinese paintings were layered with exquisite brocades, gold thread, silk, very special papers, etc. They were then rolled up and stored in beautifully decorated boxes. Here, I imitated the framing verrrrrry basically---w/ a few colored papers---'cause it was a lot quicker than 15 years! But the next time you see ancient Chinese, Korean or Japanese paintings, admire their backings (called 'scrolls'): That was an art all to itself... Thanks for your visits! I'm still commenting and will do so through the weekend. It's wonderful to be back in your galleries. Take care and stay well, everyone, mark ------------------

Oh! I love this! The space/open air/emptiness in contrast to the solid/crowded/chaos of life. The mountain taking us to Heaven or at least higher ground and fresher air. I love the dark peaks poking through the layers of clouds and sky. I feel better just looking at this painting. This is absolutely wonderful art. Do you have more?

This is wonderful, Mark! When I first saw the thumbnail, "Chinese Silk" was the first thing my mind went to. This is a beautiful example of an ancient and very beautiful art-form. I remember reading somewhere about the process for making that ink, and thinking "It must take for-ev-er to create a painting. But as you said... Meditative.

And here I go thinking if I can't put an artwork together in an hour, I'm goofing off...

And indeed, even the framing, backing and methods of preserving these is an artform of its own. 15 years... Wow.

Good to see your work here as always, Mark!

Miraculously, impressive, more than refined, haeven, clouds, skies, a space that speaks of a history (kidding: of 15 years?). Seriously, if I've to describe my impressions, what it shows me, then I've to think of a, such very old history. Then I hear, as it were: "go, and multiplies you".

The mountains in the foreground are from a creative God, who broadcasts his sons and daughters. That's what I see here happen. God, as rock, steadfast, his offspring in motion, looking for their way. I see them moving and strive for their purpose, participating a mission. Every smaller mountain has a personal assignment, for the time being for people a secret.

This special 'cloth', your creation tells the background story of a grand secret.

Thank you a lot for posting this, Mark. I stay impressed behind.

Such a shame I didn't receive ebots for your uploads, but.... I received your site mail, thank you for this. ;-)
