Your title prompted a memory I have of a friend at work, she was terribly lonely, lived alone, and had no real hope of happiness in the future for her. For some reason, she opened up to me one day at work and told me it was alright, you get used to it. All I could really do is listen. Saying anything would have been trite on my part, since I've never had that emotion. She had a sad look on her face too, like your rendered image.
