I've never seen something like this, so i stopped and took a picture.

I think this phenomenon is called a "sun dog." It's caused by refraction in the water droplets in the cloud. They do look pretty cool.
I have seen many in the west of a setting sun and usually there are 2 at a time both sides of the sun. I was lucky to see one in the East. I was on a toll road with no stopping allowed. I did not want a ticket so I resisted the temptation
