In the 1960s the Russians had a secret program to land a cosmonaut on the moon. Problems with project and the subsequent success of the American Apollo program resulted in abandonment of the Russian Program. This series of renderings examines what might have been. In this somewhat symbolic image, both cosmonauts now safely aboard, the LOK disengages from the LK ascent stage and firs its rockets to leave lunar orbit on the way home to Earth. In reality, the rockets would have been fired on the far side of the moon out of view of the Earth, and possibly in the dark.
