Description
A recent effort of mine in pencil. I didn't do any art other than CG from 1996 until April 2019, then started drawing again. This one was the first I was really happy with. Drawn from a greatly enlarged photo with all the microscopic detail included in the skin, the photo doesn't really do justice to the drawing. I hope to take better photos of future efforts. On my easel now is another eye twice this size.
The CG work I have done is always heavily influenced by my drawing experience, and when I design a 3D product it may start with rough sketches in pencil. Proper drawing though, has lapsed for the period mentioned, but will not do so again. Drawing with a pencil again made me feel as if I was coming back to life, never having realised that an important part of me died when I stopped drawing.

That is so cool! And you know your style does go across all media--I can see the shading and shapes that you like in your 3d art as well!
A man after my own heart! I too, stopped drawing (my first love!) probably 20 years ago. My eyesight was wavering and my hands just weren't as steady as they once were. I found 3D computer art to be a "nice" substitute. I really do miss doing pencil work but it is most likely just a thing in my past (heavy sigh. . .) I am very happy for your rediscovered love and I hope it continues for a long time. Keep posting and I'll keep looking!

really nicely done. great job on the lift of the graphite, and blending. i am just delighted by those inner upper lashes near the lacrimal!!! i hope you feel quite pleased with your accomplishment here, and continue in this pursuit. :))

That is just off the scale, my friend! The amount of detail in the iris is just incredible - I've been looking at this for 10 minutes, and I'm just entranced... The way you added the highlights in this, and the shading of the upper eyelid makes this so realistic. And it's definitely huge. A magnificent work of art, it is!
I haven't picked up a pencil & paper for years, although I've been kinda wanting to give it a try again. This just might push me over the edge - very inspirational!

This is extremely detailed. In a real eye reflections and highlights will cover up most of the fine texture in the iris, but this is an exploration of that detail rather than an attempt at pure realism. I like it very much. It reminds me of a drawing by one of my favorite pencil artists: Jono Dry. https://www.jonodryart.com/#/ouroboros/ although he did ONLY the iris.

Ah, Jono Dry is one of my favourites too! I actually drew the highlight only slightly reduced from the photo; of course how much of the iris is lost in the highlight varies a lot from one photo to another. When I use photos I have taken myself I use a flashgun in a dimly lit room, so I can control the position and size of the highlight by where I place my light stand with the flash umbrella. This requires a cooperative subject but it works well. When I use downloaded photos I look for ones with smaller highlights or ones that don't hide much of the iris. I want that iris detail in my drawings.
