Description
On his way home from his aunt's village, Sanjay came across this young elephant. She was standing near her fallen mother's body and actually weeping. Sanjay knew he could not leave her there over night for fear a tiger would make a meal of her...Since he wanted to gain her trust, he sat on the ground near her speaking in soft tones, calling her Jawa (flower). Wanting to gain her trust, Sanjay slowly offered her some nearby berries and other elephant favorites, which she took tentatively, gently from his outstretched hand.
The day was quickly coming to an end and there was a good distance he had to travel through the jungle before he reached his own village...As he got up and started to move away, Sanjay was pleased to see Jawa cautiously follow him...So, with constant coaxing Jawa to follow him on his journey, the two young travelers made their way through the forest. They were greeted by a small group of women on the outskirts of his village. Sanjay's mother happened to be in that group...glancing at the elephant, she greeted Sanjay with a big smile. It was going to be a most interesting evening.
