Description
We live on the river Humber, the fishing boats pass through to the docks, we are well known for the fish.
Out in the Humber you can see the lighthouse, that isn't used any more. There are also two forts in the river.
The two forts were planned in 1914 to protect the entrance to the estuary. They stand 59 feet (18 m) above the water and have a diameter of 82 feet (25 m). There was accommodation for 200 soldiers. Started in May 1915, they took more than four years to build and construction was not finished until December 1919.
During the Second World War they were reactivated and modernised. The forts were regularly attacked by enemy aircraft. During this time, they installed netting to prevent enemy submarines from travelling up the estuary to Hull or Grimsby. The forts were finally abandoned by the military in 1956.
One of the forts was sold a few years ago to an unnamed buyer & there were rumours of using it for prisoners but nothing as yet has happened.
Not a great pic of them but they are out there.
Thanks for the lovely comments, so appreciated. x

So interesting, Barbara!
Wonderful capture...the light is so lovely. I so enjoy local history, the little bits that are often overlooked but played important roles in the larger historical dramas. I googled the forts--certainly not glamorous, not attractive in the least, but did the jobs for which they were designed. Thanks for sharing...Meanwhile, back in doggie world, the girls look as though they have been enjoying their day at the beach :)
You can see them better when you zoom in. The girls look like they are having a grand time,
Cool, thanks for the info, great capture of the girls and great view!
EXCELLENT
I miss living next to the ocean and going down to the docks and getting fresh fish straight from the boats.
