Au XIIe siècle, grâce aux multiples donations des rois Plantagenêts régnant alors sur le Poitou, s'établit un nouvel ordre monastique, l'ordre de Grandmont. Vers 1197, Richard Cœur de Lion, très attaché à cette province, décide de poursuivre l'entreprise de son père en fondant un nouveau monastère grandmontain. C'est ainsi que le prieuré de Grammont voit le jour, en plein cœur de la forêt de Chassay, à l'emplacement d'une ancienne paroisse. Très vite, le monastère est pris en charge par la communauté des moines grandmontains, qui y appliquent la Règle stricte initiée par Etienne de Muret. In the 12th century, thanks to the multiple donations of the Plantagenêts kings then ruling Poitou, a new monastic order was established, the Order of Grandmont. Around 1197, Richard Cœur de Lion, very attached to this province, decided to continue his father's business by founding a new Grandmontese monastery. Thus the priory of Grammont was born, in the heart of the Chassay forest, on the site of an old parish.
