I love all these scenes...very cool. I would like to know the specs of your hardware. I did a city scene awile ago but not nearly as complex as yours, and it took forever to render with the global illumination on.
About four months ago, I was working on a Packard-Bell 333Mhz w/ somewhere about 250Mb of RAM. I began to see software that I wanted, but needed a faster machine. I checked out the new stuff in the stores. When I saw that chip speeds had leaped up into the 2+Ghz while my back was turned, I began to salivate. I eventually went with the HP Pavilion 762n [2.26Ghz with 512Mb of RAM. Comes with an NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX420 graphics card. That latter, was an unexpected boon] Without the Indirect Lighting enabled, I can RayTrace render a scene in about 30 seconds. With the ID enabled, it's about 40 minutes. I am of two minds about the ID. First, it looks good [mostly] but there's always [at least] one part of the scene that's burned out. Just too bright. And the render times are too long to be useful for animations. So I'm leaning towards re-lighting the scene and rendering with the RayTracer.
Nice set of renders of your setting, well textured and layed out. Your graphics card has nothing to do with render times, it's strictly CPU. You also don't need as many lights when using IL, you could also try lowering the photon count to reduce burnout. You should also increase your ram, it's really cheap right now. Again, you have created a great setting, love to see some fly-thru animations. Patrick
