Cold rocky high country indeed. The valley in the distance has the characteristic shape of having been carved by a mountain glacier (now long gone). The rock in the foreground (and background) is, I think, limestone. If so, it is an apparent paradox that is not so unusual - rock formed in the depths of the ocean, now found in mountain tops. Its a common feature of the Alps. I am running short of breath just thinking of the hike that got you to this spot.
