Description
The Franz Joseph Glacier at the 7,200 ft (~2,200 m) level. This part of the glacier is fed by numerous smaller glaciers higher up on the mountain, which in turn are supplied by about 30-ft of annual snow fall. This region is located in the Roaring Forties, the Southern Hemisphere latitudes between 40 degrees to 50 degrees south, which allows moisture laden strong winds blow from West to East around the globe across the Atlantic, south of the Southern tip of Africa, across the Indian Ocean south of Australia until they are hitting the Southern Alps, located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
