Description

This is a Red Hartebeest and a stock standard black crow at one of the watering holes. Red Hartebeest move alone or in small herds and are predominantly grazers, often seen in the riverbeds with Springbuck or Blue Wildebeest. They are fast runners and if approached by lions, are able to outrun them, thereby avoiding predation. Each herd consists of females, their offspring, a few subordinate males and a dominant territorial bull that does all the mating. They always look so sad with their long faces!

Nice shot - those are uniquely shaped horns. Reminds me of the (very) old joke: A horse walks into a bar, the bartender asks "Why the long face?"

Of course it looks sad. We humans are also pursued by predators but they generally won't eat us, at least not in the cities. This is a superb image but that face looks like something from the bar scene in Star Wars.

Yes, the hartebeest's head does resemble that of a horse, sans the weird horns of course. And those two do make for an odd couple. In any event, a good sharp shot.

so elegant, those horns are a work of art in themselves, such a beautifully proportioned animal.
