The young men in the back row came from another village and performed several dances including the fire dance. They were perfect physical specimen and their dances were difficult and perfectly choreographed. After several dances they added a young girl, and still later a couple young boys. I guess this is the way the kids learn the meaning of the dances and learn how to perform them. The fire dance was performed by an individual, then by two individuals, and finally also by a young boy. The dancing continued and soon all the women were dancing and one woman came to me and stood in front of me, inviting me to dance. I am not a dancer, but it would have been a faux pas on my part not to accept the invitation. I had no choice. Everybody laughed and had a good time, and they couldn't care less that I didn't know the moves - I was one of the group. At no time did I feel like a tourist. As midnight approached, it was New Years Eve, the guy sitting to my right, I suspected he was a Matai and/or a preacher, and he was about three times my size, suggested we all say a few words.
