Description
The Clock Tower is a landmark for anyone who has ever tried to give directions around Apia. Coming from the airport and nearing the Clock Tower on Vaea Street I saw the only fast food place in Samoa, a McDonald's. The Clock Tower was originally constructed in memory of those Western Samoans who fought and were killed in WW I.
It was built on the site of an old bandstand where sailors on incoming warships were serenaded by there compatriots. Its clock and the chimes were a gift to the city from one of Western Samoa's most successful early business people, Mr. Olaf Frederick Nelson, whose father had come from Sweden in 1868 and opened a chain of trading companies around the country. It was donated in memory of his only son , Ta'isi, who died in the influenza epidemic introduced to the islands by the New Zealand ship 'SS Talune' in 1918.
