Description
These mailboxes are along highway 286 south of Robles Junction in the Altar Valley southwest of Tucson. The people whose mailboxes are here may live scattered over a 20-30 square mile area. They come here to drop off and pick up their mail. This makes it easier, and probably safer, for the Postal Service.

On the right is highway 286. 47 miles between Robles Junction and Sasabe on the Mexican border.About two weeks after i took this picture Border patrol ran into 5 illegals. A scuffle ensued in which the gun of one Border Patrol agent was taken by the illegals and the agent was injured and one illegal was shot dead by the other agent. The five illegal males were from Guatemala. Most illegals that come into Arizona are from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.The countries with the most violence!

Andrea, the illegals are more interested in getting away from the border and head north and blend in, or if they are smugglers either smuggling humans or drugs, they are making way more money than robbing mailboxes. And most of them can't read or speak English and they wouldn't know what they are looking at.
This is a terrific shot! We saw something similar, only with about half the mailboxes, outside of Joshua Tree. People ask me frequently if I'm not afraid to live down here on the border half the year. The question itself is the product of what I can only describe as media hype. I feel just as safe here as I do anywhere else.
