Description

The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is a tiger subspecies that lives in the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2008, as the population was estimated at 441 to 679 individuals, with no subpopulation larger than 50 individuals and a declining trend. The Sumatran tiger is the only surviving member of the Sunda Islands' group of tigers that included the now extinct Bali tiger and Javan tiger. Sequences from complete mitochondrial genes of 34 tigers support the hypothesis that Sumatran tigers are diagnostically distinct from mainland populations. In 2017, felid taxonomy was revised by the Cat Classification Task Force of the IUCN Cat Specialist Group, who now consider the Sumatran tiger a population of the Sunda tiger subspecies Panthera tigris sondaica.

I'm always sad to read that there are some endangered species. We do not care of our environment and we're going to pay it sooner or later ! Excellent portrait !
