Description
The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, is an oval amphitheater built of concrete and sand. It is the largest amphitheater ever built. Construction began under the Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under Titus. It is estimated that the Colosseum could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles.
