Description
Luebars is a village in the Bezirk (borough) of Reinickendorf, one of 20 boroughs that make up Berlin. It was founded in 1247 and it is a Rundling (a round village) so called because all the farm houses were arranged in a circle or oval usually around the village pond and the church for defensive purposes. There are still many similar villages in the outskirts of Berlin, usually absorbed by development within the last 100 to 150 years.
For us kids growing up here during the 40s and 50s was a godsend. We usually played during the summer days in the fields and meadows, there was a small. meandering Bach (slow-flowing creek), das Fliess, that allowed us to fish, skinny dip, play cowboy and indians, and generally be up to no good.
It was also from here that we watched the Short S 25 'Sunderland' come from the northwest and land at Gatow, in the Wansee in the Berlin southwest during the Berlin Airlift.
During the Cold War, the border with the surrounding DDR (East Germany) was only about a mile from this village. The weather is typical for this time of year (fall) and is misty with occasional light rain.
