Description

Man gets caught up in the anguish of present life, but regrets his past as a tender golden moment, made only of beautiful things, forgetting the negative things he has experienced. Likewise looks with hope and desire for a future that he imagines beautiful and bright. Why are we then so pessimistic and depressed when we live real life?

Your image is a balance (bilancia): a scale, where past, present and future are weighed 'against' each other. The man in the middle is weighing past and future, to see if any one is more prominent than the other. Once again, you've visualized your thoughts beautifully. The people on each side of the scale seem joyous and buoyant. The man on the right seems to be singing: He's jubilant. But the man in the center is oppressed, burdened. Disappointed. He is 'the present', unable to embrace past or future. Once again, you've portrayed inner emotions with very vivid images.

Also, 'past and present', here, are rendered in gold tones. But the present is in a patchwork of reds, browns and greens. He is richer than the other two people, but also darker. He seems to be inconsolable. (Italiano: inconsolabile.) Like your words, he can't be consoled or inspired.

He sits on an hour-glass (clessidra). And his life seems to be expired. Perhaps he's left with nothing but memories. And he can't find the light in them, even though they are joyous. Again, you've portrayed feelings vividly.

Finally, the background is an intense gathering of geometric shapes and planes. They 'collide' with each other. The silvers and blues make a strong contrast with the hues of the three people. Visually, it's quite striking. The background is cloistered, intense. It seems to portray the man's state-of-mind. He can't find clarity or peace---only agitation and conflict. This is another of your powerful images: It's a vivid visualization. Brilliantly done, Giuliano. You put great thought and artistry into your art.

Indeed. Some people live too much in the past, while others ignore the past and what it can teach for one's future. We are always in the present, but we can remember the past and dream of the future.
