1962 Was a new campus year in the same residence with a new roommate, my third. One Sunday we drove into Detroit to Logghe Stamping. In a warehouse, we could see a dark shape. It was a twin engine dragster. With NHRA outlawing exotic fuels the cars on gasoline again sought new formulas. Hot Rod had a technical article about the very engine in this dragster. It was the first 4 inch by 4 inch Chevrolet V-8. The pistons had plugs over the piston pins with grooves for the piston rings since with the stock deck height the crowns of the pistons (Forgedtrue?) now were only a few inches high. A custom crank with a four-inch stroke (Moldex?) replaced the 3-1/4-inch stroke of a 327. Now each engine had 400 cubic inches. What was going on this day was my roommate’s friend from High school was replacing the Joe Hunt Vertex magnetos with Mallory Mini-Mags. The Mallory items had a small battery pack and ordinary points. I noticed that he used Link-Belt type timing chains. I had a Corvette dual row roller chain on my car. He thought that the roller type stretched but was a good coupling between the two engines with back to back sprockets. (Am I making this last sentence up?) From then on one had to distinguish between a 409 big-block and a 400, small block. Earlier this same roommate had introduced me to his friend Paul who had a 409 cubic-inch Biscayne two door no special trim and 360 horse power from a single (Carter AFB, I think) four barrel. Wow! With Positraction and 4.11: 1 gears in the rear and a 4 speed it just fishtailed. This opened a way it seems to a special order from Parkwood Chevrolet in Lakewood, California for a 1965 Chevelle Malibu convertible with a 396 with 375 horsepower, Positraction aluminum four speed but normal 3:33 rear gears. When that did not come through as it was late August coming up I waited.

Here is one of my baffling comments. Sorry about the SAE. I could not hear you over the DIN. Get the NET this blunder is really going to slip though as GROSS. Sure you can read the decal but what is it saying? 375? That was 1965. 325 that must be true it has a Rochester form. 360? Now that is Holley spread bore and what do they know about spread bore? In California with A.I.R., PCV, EGR and a disconnected vacuum spark advance? 375? OK but it's late. Maybe next year? 210 Ugh!! what happened 10 years later and the power is so low the block casting is being lightened to reduce strength. I'm gone!! Keep the A/C and the PB. I don't even want to hear about Velvet touch!
