Description

For nearly 20 years this red tailed hawk has brought a touch of wild nature to adults and school children through educational programs presented by a local raptor rehab center for which I do volunteer photography. She will spend the remainder of her life with good shelter, good tasty mice and excellent medical care. She has a companion hawk with whom she shares her area. She is not fed live mice but rather selected freshly thawed food. Her facial expression and strong eye make a fitting portrait. She is molting as shown by fuzzy head feathers. In my work with the raptors, we have no stylist or make up artists for these times. ++ I recommend you click for the larger view.

Beautiful photo! I assume she recognizes all who are about in her living space. Sharp look in her eye. No problems photographing? Keep up the good work! :-)

Her roommate is a much younger red-tailed hawk and that one wants to scoot about. She moves when the other one does and both must settle for a decent photo. When around a crowd or curious school children, the handler must keep a firm grip on her jesses. There is still amount of "the wild" in the educational service raptors.
