This was taken yesterday in a small village called Puckington near Ilminster, Somerset.

The thatch is so well installed and so compact that it looks artificial. Its a wonderful shot. In Los Angeles during the 1920s a style of architecture became popular. It was called 'Fairytale' and was designed to look like the cottages out of stories such as Snow White. Asphalt tiles were heated and rolled to mimic the thatched roofs of these fairytale houses. The art of 'rolled roofs' has long since disappeared and, while the houses remain, very few of those roofs are left today.

On a few bus trips along the English country roadsides, [in 2014] I'd actually spotted quite a few of these quaint thatched roof cottages, they are a never-ending fascination to me and you know just how to present them Jeff, e.g. by getting out of the car and take a pic and not while driving quickly past, on a bus, looking through a window, like a 'spot-the-silly-tourist' ! LOL - marvelous shot !
