An African mask that our friends brought home from a trip (I replace the background with a photo of tree bark that I took)...

How fun to take pictures of your friend's stuff! It's so easy to see how someone else's possessions are more interesting than one's own. I remember how much fun I had taking pictures at your place. :) The bark background is wonderful with this mask. Such a fascinating and beautiful object!

I'm just doing a few right now, but I'll come back for more in a day or two. (I wanted to do a few now because I just wanted to get my feet wet in your waters again, even though I've seen everything you've posted throughout). The bark is a fine background, it's probably something the original mask makers would've liked, because their styles are so connected to their materials, and wood remains a major material in these masks. And the your stark contrasts of shadow and light (in the bark) suits the stark contrasts in the mask as well. It's a striking mask, and the purplish undertones go well with the undertones of the bark. As a straight-on capture, it has real presence, directness and mystery.
