Calque de l’anglais collateral damage, expression employée par l’armée des États-Unis pendant la guerre du Vietnam. Collateral ayant parfois en anglais la signification de supplémentaire, l’expression a été créée afin de choquer moins l’opinion.

English Collateral Damage, used by the US Army during the Vietnam War. Collateral sometimes having in English the meaning of extra, the expression was created to shock less opinion.
