Description
Pomatoceros triqueter on inside surface of a flat oystershell.
The calcareous tube is triangular in section and can be a common sight on rocks of the lower shore. They are suspension feeders, tentacles emerging when covered by water. The planktonic larva settles on the rock to first secrete a thin, transparent tube, quickly forming a larger, mineralised one latter. Once established they grow quickly and may be mature in 4 months. The tubes are porous and this will confine them to the lower shore to avoid desiccation.
