Silly old fool, he thought - but he might have something worth stealing ... "You shouldn't think so much." said the old man, "your brain might overheat." Ranakor reached for his long knife and raised it to eye level. "And if you talk too much," he replied, grinning, " maybe your tongue might become a danger to you." The old man reached out, touched the blade and immediately a shock ran through Ranakor's arm; the blade was glowing a fiery red and he could not let go of its handle; in the same moment he glanced at the old man's face and realised, too late, that this stranger was neither old nor a fool; the handle was burning his fingers, the blade, white hot now, scorched his face and blurred his vision. "Perhaps," he heard, "your temper could do with a little cooling touch?" Two hands clasped his skull between them, and suddenly, terrifyingly, his head grew rapidly colder, colder, and he screamed out with the pain until his tongue was still and his head a solid block of ice. "Unfortunate," said the old man, "but necessary; Nature will quietly dispose of him and he will be of more use to the community now than he ever was when alive."
