Description
The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 to protect desert bighorn sheep. The refuge is located in the Yuma Desert Region of the Sonoran Desert, in La Paz and Yuma Counties, Arizona and encompasses an area of 2,693 square miles.Summer temperatures often exceed 120 F (49 C) and the area receives little rainfall, as the summer monsoons usually don't affect areas this far west.,
The population of the desert bighorn sheep was recently estimated to be 428, but it is difficult since the sheep are usually within the two rugged mountain ranges. the Kofa Mountains (shown) and the Castle Dome Mountains.
Kofa is a contraction of the 'King of Arizona' mine, a gold mine which operated between 1897 and 1910. The refuge is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
