Description
Also known as Fiddleneck
The council sowed a great many of these this year and they seem to be crowding out the other wild flowers.
"An annual grown in gardens for ornament, in allotments as a `green manure`, and in fields as a source of nectar for bees and for hoverflies that prey on aphids. It is found in cultivated ground (including the edges of arable fields), rubbish tips, waste ground, pavement cracks, and in newly sown grass leys, where it originates as a seed contaminant. It also occurs as a bird-seed and pheasant feed alien.
This species has been cultivated in Britain since 1832. It was first recorded in the wild in 1885 (S. W. Yorks.), and appears to be increasing."
