Description
British White Cows
This is one of the breeds that Bournemouth Parks and Countryside team uses for mowing. They say
"We have around 60 cattle and ten British feral goats. The breeds of cattle we have include Belted Galloways, British Whites and Shetland.
We have chosen breeds that are known for having a calm nature around people and other animals."
Using livestock grazing to manage these areas is an effective and environmentally friendly way to look after natural habitats, the benefits include:
Stopping unwanted scrub and tree growth
Allowing nature to manage itself
Providing a much wider range of vegetation types
Helping wildlife.
However the couple of you who live in Bournemouth may remember the outrage from some environmentally challenged folk when the cows were first introduced.
It even led to a flaming row between myself and a 'friend' almost resulting in a semi permanent rift ! I have lived here all my life, and when I was a child all this land that is now a reserve was farmed. She had no memory of that, living in a bungalow that is on land that was once a field in this very same farm.
It was the herds that made the beaches in the river bank that we all now enjoy so much.

Wonderful capture, Andrea! Interesting narrative and history - it's amazing what can happen if nature is left to itself - It gets better, by golly!
what can't others see that?
My goodness. Who could object to cows? A nearby farm keeps Belted Galloways, and it's always a pleasure to see them. I'm a small-town woman though, and am used to livestock. Perhaps if I were from the city, I would be a bit more nonplussed.
Two benefits you forgot to list. They naturally fertilize the area and they provide children with the opportunity to see actual animals. When I was a child I had to go on a field trip to see cows. They photograph very well.
It will work where you are Andrea. In south Africa they might just be stolen or slaughtered , just like ,most of South Africa is torched daily. With the recent uprise of protest due to the fact that my black brothers and citizens of Pretoria was not satisfied with the new mayor that was nominated by the African National Congress all around Pretoria were protests, busses were burned,Tyre s were burnt, Road was filled with rocks, stones and bricks and rubble and the majority of shops was looted. It also came out in the newspapers that the police was instructed to protect goverment buildings and houses and one of the newspapers bosses was even warned by the minister of intelligence not to publish a document with this information. I tell every here that the South Africa of today is not my South Africa any more . I do not fell comfortable to be a citizen of South Africa. More of what i mention i predict and see will happen more in more here in South Africa. How can it be different with a president and ANC Member covering for a crook who already failed with two court applications of his corruption charges to be dropped, not even talking about the millions that was spend on his Nkandla that he must pay back of which treasury worked out that he only need to pay back 88% Just over Seven million rand.I tell you i just want to move, but where do i go. May our Lord Jesus Christ guide and protect all its citizens. God bless.
Gosh Christo, what a nightmare! I had no idea things were so bad where you live. I do hope you find a solution for yourself and family!
GREAT idea ...AND.... they are lovely to see too :-) Wonderful shot Andrea :)
We have cows on the country park, they have calves so we have to be careful.
