I'm not sure whether this idiom is common to both UK and US English, but never mind.
I was extremely browned off when I broke this pot lid today whilst reaching into the cupboard for an egg cup !
It is the only remaining one of it's sort that I made as all the others were sold years ago. I still had this as there was no pot to go with the lid., but it was waiting as a spare for a pot with a foot on top,which is my sugar bowl, in case I broke that.
I am not prone to accidental breakages, I can't remember how many years, even decades, it is since I had one. Infuriating!

Not a phrase I'm familiar with, I'm afraid. Sorry you had a break, I hate when that happens too. I rarely break things, but my dad and mom are both extremely clumsy in the kitchen; all my dishes have chips, cracks or are outright broken now!
