Description

Nüwa (女媧) was a goddess from ancient Chinese mythology who appeared sometime after Pangu opened up and created Heaven and Earth (check out 'WorldMaker', one of my earlier renders [https://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/worldmaker/2493516/] ). She was said to have created humankind out of clay. After she had peopled Earth with humans, a war broke out between two lesser deities which severely damaged the Cosmos; terrible fissures tore through the blue vault of the Sky, through which the waters of chaos thundered down to Earth, causing widespread death and destruction. Anxious to save her children, Nüwa melted down large stones and with the liquid rock proceeded to patch up the rifts in the firmaments. Eventually her work was done and humanity saved, but the Sky was permanently tilted in certain ways that set the heavenly bodies in their current courses. This work was originally a sketch I did but I presented it to a paper cut master of incredible skill from Beijing and, as with the WorldMaker, he had this made into a paper cut, which I then scanned with certain colors being added to the scanned image. The coming Monday is Chinese New Year Day, by the way. This year is the Year of the Monkey. Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year! ;)

It's an interesting technique; I had a book about Monkey in which all the illustrations were in this style. Very nice!
