Description

It was at this spot at Cheviot Beach Australia that our 17th Prime Minister, Harold Edward Holt, vanished whilst swimming and was never seen again. On the morning of Sunday 17 December 1967, Holt together with friends Christopher Anderson, Jan Lee, and George Illson and his two bodyguards, drove down from Melbourne to see the British yachtsman Alec Rose sail through Port Phillip Heads in his boat Lively Lady to complete a leg of his solo circumnavigation of the globe, which started and ended in England. Around noon, the party drove to one of Holt's favorite swimming and snorkeling spots, Cheviot Beach on Point Nepean near Portsea, on the eastern arm of Port Phillip Bay. Holt decided to go swimming, although the surf was heavy and Cheviot Beach was notorious for its strong currents and dangerous rip tides. Despite a huge man hunt, he was never seen again. Conspiracy theories abound to this day. Everything from he was taken by aliens to a Chinese submarine picked him up. I've been coming to this beach all my life and know well how dangerous it can be. In my mind there is no mystery as to what happened to him........I'm sure the men in grey suits ate well that day. Click 'open full size' for the best view.

Nothing would have induced me to swim there even when I was young and very fit. Maybe Mr Holt had too high an opinion of his own power. Great photo, Andrew, it really smells of lurking danger.

Lovely beach, but I can see from the waves that this would be a challenge for swimmers. How come the best looking beaches are the most dangerous?

Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to swim there. This works equally well as a very appealing abstract image, IMHO...

That is a shame about the loss of life, but the shot is stunning... look at all those subtle shades of color mixed with foam and sand. It's a very beautiful shot.

Looks dodgy to me, I'd stay on shore well above the tide line! I think your theory is most likely the correct one!
