Description
The world famous Komodo dragon, captured back on 3/13/10, at the beautiful Griffith Park/Los Angeles Zoo, in Los Angeles, California.
Just two of 42 shots I have of this beauty, as it meandered about its compound, which was constructed in such a way as to make it feel like it's in its home territory. I like these guys because they move slowly, have a handsome reptilian hide, and are not reticent upon facing the crowd, giving the opportunity for a good photograph. All of the pics were snapped through a large pane of glass.
The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also known as the Komodo monitor, is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. A member of the monitor lizard family Varanidae, it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to a maximum length of 3 metres (10 ft) in rare cases and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 lb).
As shown in the bottom photo, the Komodo dragon uses its tongue to detect, taste, and smell stimuli, as with many other reptiles, with the vomeronasal sense using the Jacobson's organ, rather than using the nostrils.

I felt sorry for this fellow, most likely bored to death from deja vu roaming around the compound, with little other stimuli than visitors standing, shouting and gaping at it.
Arrivederci.

Great shots of this giant lizard, Harry; it's so strange to see one that large! Looks like the glass is cleaner than what I'm used to seeing at zoos around here.
both shots are sprawling in their own ways, there's such variety of shape, direction, texture, etc, that they have a kind of primal sprawling presence. Esp the top one. It feels to me like an idyllic Eden-like setting. And the bottom one, with the lizard crossing your verticals---it makes a really fine visual counter-action, or counterpoint to those rocks, etc. These are really fine shots, Harry---and the beast itself is big, and looks as lumbering as you say he is. And, in the bottom shot, he looks like his skin is flopping all over him. You caught his huge feel and his slowness (and his tongue!) Two really fine shots. In setting and in the magnificent beast itself...
Perfect Capture of both!!! They give us a view into the prehistoric days!!!
If I saw one of those in the wild, I would become an instant triathlon runner.
Two fantastic photos of this huge and imposing lizard. Looks dangerous, I would keep a very large distance.
My favorite lizard too;love this Komodo dragon;klasse shot, super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the surviving dinosaurs. Look cute and harmless but are NOT to be fooled around with. Meat eater and a good fighter and rather fast runner. Nice photos of it. Give a good idea of size and skin texture. More! Keep up the good work! :-)
Very impressive captures of these prehistoric creatures Harry!
I love it also... Marvelous captures my friend !!!
