Description
We spent the last two days at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho. It's a fascinating and beautiful place, but most of what's so interesting about it isn't all that photogenic! Don't get me wrong ... I took more than 400 pictures there ... but they're not nearly as inspiring as seeing the place first hand. Rock formations that are amazing and colorful in person just looks like rocks in the pictures. We had a terrific time there, but I'm not sure how much of it you'll get to see!
Craters of the Moon is an old lava bed with a wide variety of formations. Even rock breaks down, though, and there are plenty of places where vegetation has covered the lava. I don't know what the brush is, but those branches are from a limber pine.

Excellent composition. The pine branches make the photo. I'm not surprised this image has so much vegetation. Lava eich is broken down into earth is supposed to be very fertile. Something to do with the minerals in it.
This is a fine pic and I agree with Mark.
Cappachino country! Something weird happened to my left and best eye last night , and so this looked a bit like frothy coffee in the thumbnail. The way the light catches the bushes is so lively and the contrast of those cream tones with the tree is perfect.

Oh, I get where you are coming from, Tara. I took dozens and dozens of photos of the Carrizozo Lava Fields in NM, and even posted one or two, but they just don't make for the most photogenic landscape shots, even if the subject matter is totally fascinating. So, I like this image cuz I can imagine what the place looked like. :)

Love the light & the color tones in this photo. But there's a weird kind of optical illusion happening here. That thick middle branch that's coming directly out of the upper left diagonal corner seems to be simultaneously both in the foreground & disappearing behind the brush that seems to be in the background!
I know exactly what you mean about locations that are amazing in person, but very difficult to get across in photos. Sometimes we can get creative & manage to convey the unique qualities of a place in two dimensions, but sometimes we just have to resign ourselves to it...

I don't know what that stuff is, but it does look quite frothy, and the whole looks almost like an infrared shot. I know what you mean about it not looking the same in photos as it does in life; I have that problem all the time when I'm out and about. The magic that my eyes see somehow doesn't register in the camera. It's annoying as heck, but that's the way it is.
