Description
I was testing some free downloads from HDRI-Hub.com, the free figure and the HDRI background, and did renders in both Carrara's native renderer and using Octane Render for Carrara. I thought this was useful to show how close Carrara's renderer CAN get with the right settings - I also adjusted the overall brightness and contrast a little to give them the same exposure, and the DoF in the Carrara one is done with a Photoshop blur, but otherwise they are both "as rendered". You can achieve similar results by following my techniques in the Carrara-Realism Rendering training title by Infinite Skills.

Very interesting comparison. The light and shadow quality is almost identical. The Carrara one has some blotchiness and blurring in the textures, though. Perhaps the shader needs the texture filtering turned up a notch or two?

As the world moves towards physically based rendering, logically the results should converge as they are all trying to model reality (with a small "r"!).
Which do you favour? I'm trying to push myself to use Carrara with all sorts of different settings but sometimes, when I compare my work to others, it sometimes lacks 'reality' to me.
The default settings in Carrara are geared towards speed rather than quality - in my tutorial videos Carrara Realism Rendering I go through lighting, render settings and materials to get the best out of the Carrara renderer, and the difference compared to the defaults are really stark! Or for a shortcut, you can use one the physically based renderers, there is Luxus and Octane available for Carrara, Octane is way faster (currently) and produces great results (and can also render Carrara Hair, which for me is a huge plus), but it is the more costly option.

I have both your Carrara modelling DVDs. I also got the 8.5 addition download. They're very easy to follow. Well the first chapter is, as I've not had a chance to watch them all the way through.

Both are great renders with their own strengths. I like the character too. Looks like a custom morph. Well done.
