Description
Captured 4/12/15 @ 11:53 am, at the once beautiful Descanso Gardens in beautiful La Canada Flintridge, California.
Never seen anything like this before. Anyone willing to hazard an identification on this big guy? There were no labels around these beauties to tell what they were. Love the double rows of leaves that constitute the huge fronds.
Have a nice day.

Nice shot! I'm guessing it's one of the thousands of fern species... what one can't say ;)
I stand corrected... darn ferny-looking artichoke plant.
This is an artichoke plant. Have had several over the years. NOT a fern.
I followed up on your claim that this is an artichoke plant, and, by golly, it appears that you're quite correct as to its identification. There were several varieties of the plant, species of which grow various types of artichoke, and they share many of the same characteristics as the one above, which didn't have any artichokes that I could see. Thanks loads on this. What I don't understand is why they would grow artichokes, a vegetable, in what is basically a flower garden.
It's an artichoke and I have several of them in my yard!! Nothing better!!!
Very great shot my friend !!! Great lights also !!!
Well, that's an ID I would never have known. What a spectacular plant that is! Proud and prickly as heck, and very beautiful. Seems a bit odd to see it in a rose garden, wonder if someone planted it surreptitiously? Although it does seem that whoever planted it knew it would be huge and left it lots of room to spread out. What a great find, Harry, and a wonderful capture!
Well, how interesting! I've eaten them but have never seen the plant before. Nice find Harry and well shot!
Thanks to you Nature offers us many surprises ... I have been far from suspecting that it could be a variety of artichoke !!! very cool !!!
as you know by now, my knowledge of plant names is limited to 2 or 3 flowers, and a lot of "it's green" and "it's prickly". So I'm glad others knew it was an artichoke plant. Now, here you're near noon (in this shot), with that overhead light: It's so stark, and perfect for this primal pointy beauty. It's a capture of zig zags and saw shapes, and harsh light and deep shadow (on the ground especially). And a parched earth around it, with flowers in the background. Fine light and shadow here, sharp edged and imposing....a really fine capture of the whole milieu of such a plant...and of the hour it's shot, too. Noon light is so tough, and this shot captures it unblinkingly.
OH HAHA! I am glad I didnt suggest it was a thistle, which was my first thought, as I have never seen an artichole plant before. A mighty beautiful shot :-)
Yes, well.... I have seen them here as well but being a bit dense in the name department mate, can't help you with it.. Neat shot though. Rob
