Description

So, this little guy doesn't do so well in the "cute department". Many people look at an Opossum and say it is ugly, and that it has an ugly tail. OK. It may not be the most beautiful baby, be we humans don't need to throw stones about ugly tails......nuff said. This boy is about 24 days old. When he was born he weighed less that 1/8 gram and was 1/4 inch long. He should have been in moms pouch for another 8 weeks. He is the only survivor of a car. We can't bottle feed these babies as they do not suckle. They swallow the nipple in the pouch and the let down feeds them. We have to tube feed them for several weeks. Opossums are not just cairn eaters. They eat many small rodents and bugs. They also eat some leaves. When I do program, I ask what do opossums eat. Someone, not always an adult, answers with road kill. You should see the look on their faces when I ask what they ate before there were cars. If you look ate his hands, you will see another almost human hand. They also grasp with their fingers to hold food and on to moms fur when they are old enough to ride on her back.

"Only a mother..."??? I beg to differ with you. This little one IS CUTE. I'm glad you have the patience, love and equipment to help these little ones. Will you continue to post photos of this little one, too, so we can see his progress? As for hands, if rats were to have thumbs, my, what they would be able to accomplish! Maybe the world would be a lot better off with animals ruling it? Keep up the good work! :-) And a Happy Easter to you and your kin! Kitty says "Meow!"
