Sand Hills
Central Nebraska
October, 2014
One of the places Bill and I have wanted to see for a long time is central Nebraska. Did you know that Nebraska contains a large desert filled with grass-covered sand dunes? Now ... you see? You find out all sorts of things when you pay attention.
Look at Nebraska on the satellite view on Google maps, zoom in a bit, and you'll see the sand formations undulating across the north-central part of the state.
We finally got our chance to take that drive this fall. We braved a night in Alliance, Nebraska, and then drove across on Highway 2 and stayed in Grand Island the next night. It was worth the time and trouble. Such a lovely, relaxing landscape!

A very unique landscape & the hay bales add some extra visual interest to it. I remember being very surprised to find huge expanses of desert-like sand dunes on the Oregon coast & would probably have been equally surprised to find this in Nebraska (a state I have never visited). By coincidence, I took some photos of stacks of hay bales a few days ago, though I haven't checked them out yet to see if they're worth posting...
This is my kind of therapy. I love the fall time with the hay rolls and colors. I just returned from Illinois. I had forgotten how flat the land is and how the wind always blows. Me mother always saw to it that our vacations were all about nature. We camped every where. This is a beautiful capture.

That's really a lovely view, and a great photo, Tara! Actually, I have looked at this area in Google Earth, and it looks very interesting - a place I'd like to visit. It looks like the very northernmost part of the S.Dakota Badlands also stretches into this area of Nebraska.
Beautifully composed scenic shot; I am sure I've driven through there at least once, but never spent much time (I probably spent a night camping, but I was MUCH younger!) Well captured, and I'm glad you got to explore a bid!

My memory of Nebraska was 500 miles of cornfields. You managed to find a beautiful pastoral scene to change my perspective. Wonderful work.

This is a magnificent landscape and photo, my friend. The mood is so lovely (captured). In a way on this photo it looks a bit like in our area, but I know it is in real quite different; a friend of my was visiting her aunt and uncle who live there, and for 6 weeks they toured through that amazing land.
Great capture Tara. I have driven through Nebraska before and coming from the east somewhere along the way the transition from the Eastern plains to the Western plain happens. Getting off the freeway and stop in any of the little farming communities and have breakfast and see the old farmers talking about politics. It can be miserable when it is cold and windy. Where are you now. have you run into any snow yet?
