Description
With hindsight, the Battle of The Coral Sea was apparently not the "Battle that Saved Australia" though it must have seemed like it was at the time. Yet the "fog of war" was piled on so thick that in amongst all the other chaos and misunderstandings, May 7th 1942 briefly became the Battle of HMAS Australia. Level bombers of the USAAF 435th Bombardment Squadron ("Kangaroo Squadron") searching for the Japanese invasion force off the tail of New Guinea mistook distant Bettys and Nells for USAAF twin-engine bombers and decided to join an attack in progress. They briefly sprayed pretty HMAS Australia, still decked out in her dazzling Atlantic Theatre finery, with shrapnel and ocean and earned themselves a rebuke from "friendly" AA. Folks back home didn't see that in the newsreels!!!

Poor Australia! Sounds about right, In the Desert Allied aircraft that to wear Stars so they would not get attacked.. I mean how hard is it not to spot a Spitfire? They did get better though lol Great Render Rob
Nice picture and interesting story. Well, such friendly fire situations were common in ww2. People were very nervous in Australia after the lost battles in Indonesia. It was a very dramatic time. Most people look at the big battles in Coral Sea or Midway. But there were dramatic battles in 1941/1942 in defending Indonesia. The Japanese never intended to invade Australia but nobody knew that in 1942.
Very interesting bit of history to go with a cool render. I really like the intermittent cloud cover as well as the turning wakes. Good job!.
