Description
The green iguana or common iguana is a large mostly plant eating species of lizard living in Mexico, Central and South America plus the Caribbean islands. They are very common throughout Puerto Rico and considered as a pest. In the United States feral populations exist in South Florida (including the Florida Keys), Hawaii, and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. It has adapted significantly because of their speed and ability to climb trees. It grows up to 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) in length from head to tail with bodyweights upward of 20 pounds (9.1 kg).
We have been down in South Florida for about two and a half weeks and this was my first walk into the swamp. This Iguana was about 4 feet long (1.2 meters) and very aggressive. He had two elderly ladies cornered on the boardwalk. One had bright red sneakers! Iguanas have very sharp claws for climbing and I cropped this photo so you could checkout the claws. We got the ladies on their way and the Iguana folded his legs back to relax in the sun. I have not seen the blue color on his shoulders before and because the first four spines behind the blue area are damaged, the blue area may be damaged skin from a fight or mating ritual. Some info from Wikipedia. Best details in zoom..
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Amazing details. :)))) I hope the damage wasn't done while mating. LOL!!!! Ouch. LOL!!!! He/she is trying to get all warmed up. :))))) Thank you for helping those ladies. :))))) Most excellent capture my friend. :)))) Thank you for sharing all of the warm beauty you see. :)))) Hope you and your wife are enjoying life. :))))) Start each day with a smile. :))))
great info on him, dana. also great shot that is best zoomed. looks like it's enjoying the sun.. that's some rough mating if it was the cause..
He looks very relaxed, lol.
beautiful critter and superb foto. I am glad there are none around Dallas
At first I thought he was dead. His eyes also appear to be on the ground. ..ok...I better go to be LOL....amazing shot here :-)
His head would have been on the walkway if he were dead. He was in the sun to warm his body. Reptiles do not generate body warmth like humans they get their body warmth from the sun. The half open eye was watching me moving in for the photo!
Fabulous and very cool capture Dana! I thought he was wearing some form a skull cap at first
I think I'll pass on letting him climb up my legs, thankyewverymuch!
What a beautiful creature.
Very attractive in a prehistoric way! Did you get a photo of the cornered ladies?
The two elder ladies may not take their morning walk in the swamp any more. I should have snapped off a photo as 'random women' but the boy scout in me was just trying to get the ladies out of a stressful situation.
Un superbe animal au repos, mais il semble dangereux! Nice capture! A beautiful animal at rest, but it seems dangerous! Jolie photo!
He is a very attractive chap Dana and a good zoom.
The ladies might be afraid ! Excellent and very sharp capture of this beautiful but dangerous animal, Dana !
belle bete
Looks like a very lazy guy :)
He looks quite blissful in the warm sun; I can't imagine encountering a large reptile on a boardwalk, but then I haven't been in Florida. Wonderful capture and information!
J'adore sa position longée au soleil. Superbe prise de vue Dana. C'est une merveilleuse photographie. I like his position followed to the sun. Magnificent capture Dana. It is a marvelous photography.
A nice sharp image of this iguana.I'm sure that the 2 ladies where glad that you came along when you did.

He looks like he is having a nice nap! Great shot!!!!
Very good capture!
Excellent shot - great color and detail
Awesome capture, love it!
Great shot !!!
They are not welcome in my yard (I live in S.W. Florida), they can trash a garden or flowerbed in no time!
marvellous capture
beautiful capture
cool shot of this one
Cool shot and interesting information Dana. At first I thought that blue part was a scarf or something like that. I have seen some similar sized ones in belize and oi wouldn't want to run into an aggressive one.
A Great capture
This is such an intriguing portrait, Dana! I'm really fascinating by all the fabulous textures and colors, which you captured so very well, and there is so much to discover by looking over all the details in zoom. A great photo, and info as well, my friend. Thank you very much for sharing this!
Beautiful animal and a fantastic photo of it. Interesting to see all the details. Thanks also for the interesting informations.
