Description
Wembley Stadium, Camp Nou, Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden are considered among the greatest sporting arenas in the world, but for history, pure drama and emotion, it’s hard to look past the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The MCG was built in 1853 and, since then, has established a marvellous history.
Known colloquially as the ‘G, Australia’s favourite stadium is the birthplace of Test cricket and the home of Australian football, holding more than 80 events annually and attracting close to four million people. It has hosted more than 100 Test matches (including the first in 1877) and VFL/AFL Grand Finals.
The MCG was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games, hosting all track and field events, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. In 2006, the MCG again played this role, this time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

It's only the rest of the world that think Wembley stadium that way mate, I think the old Wembley stadium was more to the truth there, the new one was completed, and a week later the roof leaked, shoddy rushed building work, the old stadium for my generation will always be the memory of 1966.
Very cool capture - Though I had to hold off on the smart comments when there was more water than anything else and make the statement about Cricket being all wet. do they play Rugby there as well? is there an interior shot of the field itself?
outstanding capture. myself I have little interest in sports but like stadiums for their architectural style
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
cool shot
How cool. No nothing of the game.
The MCC of the Southern Hemisphere. Nice shot.
Perhaps one day I'll understand cricket, but for now I'll stick with baseball. Marvelous photograph!
It's in a lovely setting, that's for sure. Great capture!
Indeed.. Nothing compares to the battle for that VERY VERY SMALL trophy known as the Ashes! lol The rivalry, the battles, the tears! The joys, the heroes! Epic! Great shot, and no, I'm not a big Cricket fan either But still I'm a Pom! Rob
By the way, I think the New Wembley is bollocks, cheap, way to modern and they obliterated our greatest moment in Football History in a stroke! P.C. gone wrong. KEEP yours! Rob
I like the old classical stadiums and I watched the 1956 Olympics, for the first time, telecast from that stadium. A 9 inch (23 cm) round B & W TV. :o)
