Description

I had no idea who this is, so I was relying on Juliette to tell me ! It was only about 15mm long Dyspetes praerogator , someone on Flickr found this very likely ID!

At first I thought it was a sunburned grasshopper but Juliette put me on the right track. From Wikipedia: The small caterpillars killer (Ammophila campestris) is a vliesvleugelig insect from the family of the long shaft excavation wasps (Sphecidae) . [1] The scientific name of the species was first published in 1809 by valid Latreille Terrific close up of this mysterious stranger.

What an interesting wasp thing! I think the name caterpillar killer sounds so brutal for such a striking insect. Your "Orange thighed wasp" sounds far better! Superb find and shot!
