Description
A parking lot in NYC that uses hydraulic lifts to stack cars vertically. When population density gets to extreme levels as it does in urban areas, this is the result. I admire the technical innovation, but am very glad that I don't live in such a high density area any more. Many years ago, I read a book called The Human Zoo written by zoologist Desmond Morris in which he compares the behavior of human city dwellers to the behavior of animals confined to cages in a zoo. He attributed the increased levels of abnormal behavior (stress, anxiety, violence) in urban areas to living in unnaturally crowded conditions. Probably an over-generalization (many people thrive & do well in high density cities), but I think it has a good deal of validity...

I hate the crowding, but love this capture for its beautiful lines, colour and geometry!
That was a set book for a course I once did!
Great innovation but you probably don't get your car back in a hurry !!
It's a great way to cut down on monstrous carparks that waste so much energy to build and maintain. I wonder about the sardine can cars in front. Are they parked too? And how would you get yours out? Great urban living shot.
Very cool capture. as long as there is a perceived reliance on the automobile (of any form) as well as the one person per car syndrome, then places like these will be needed
Nice. The reflections off the windshields and cars are excellent. Good job.
I've never seen this sort of thing for cars! We've got stacking storage at the marina, but this is new to me. Thanks for the look!
Great shot but you won't catch me parking there!
Cities do have a zoo-like quality to be sure. It's one of the holes one falls into, when living in them (as you know, having lived in NYC). This captures that cloistered, falling-on-you feel. But as photography it's a fine abstract, a big wall of faces (parked cars), harmonized by the windows behind. And the cars on the ground, shining, in your treatment, like big baubles. Lots of glow here, and lots of geometric regularity. It's a fine capture of formal music, and your high-key light is balanced by the deep darks. Another fine capture of the patterns of life in front of our eyes. And those "P" signs (I assume for "Parking") make a fine upper frame to the structure. A not-so-pleasant sight, in real life, but a scintillating vision as art.
I'll park on the street thank you!
