Description
Probably the last of my fire-related photos, as the fire is well under control now. I shot this air tanker as it flew over my house on it's way to drop retardant on the fire. Although I saw it drop the retardant (which would have made a much more dramatic shot) a little later, I was distracted by other events & didn't have my camera handy at the time. But I don't often get to take photos of large aircraft flying this low, so I was happy to get this one.
I'm not very knowledgeable about planes, but a quick google image search (I actually found a photo of this exact plane, number & all!) told me that this is a DC-7 built by Douglas Aircraft between 1953 & 1958, that it was the last major piston-engine powered transport made by Douglas, coming just a few years before the advent of jet aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 & that the external tank attached to the bottom holds about 3,000 gallons of retardant...
Please zoom.

This is a very cool capture. the really cool thing I see, is that even with the choppers doing their part, the prop jobs like this one will not go away because they can fly slow enough to drop the FR on the fire whereas a jet would probably miss the mark unless the pilot was Luke Skywalker......
These old planes serve an important function for sure! Glad to hear they've got everything under control.
cool capture; glad the fire is coming to its end
Nice capture. Glad you've got aerial support!
Great capture !!!
Marvelous capture !!!
I love the shot! I am glad NOT to see these flying because it means fire destruction when you see one. We have the P2V Neptunes around here doing fire duty.
Excellent shot of this big firefighter; glad things are calming down a bit!
A great capture and zoom and God bless the men & women that fly those planes into fire zones!
