Witt the pressure gauge there my guess would be some sort of steam gearing or generator.
I got one, it cleans the water that comes in my house then someone took it, and I believe that's it so put it on the boat!----Yeah Right!---, I have no idea what that piece of rust is either, but your photo is pretty. Stan

very cool - sure looks like it would be more at home in some dark woods by a stream, or in the mountains.
It is a steam powered ore washer. Water flows through it as it rotates, removing clay and leaving behind the rock and gold. I've seen "modern" versions in North Carolina made from an old cement mixer.
Whatever "62guy" said but I just like the rusty textures!
